Natural Gas is colourless and odourless. For safety reasons, all Utilities add Mercaptan to Natural Gas. This chemical, also known as Odorant, gives Natural Gas its very distinctive odour. This is designed to alert you to the possibility of a gas leak.
If you can smell gas or suspect a gas leak, please call Ankerton Gas Co-op immediately at 780-373-3773. If it is out of hours, please follow the directions on the message to reach our 24/7 on call personnel.
Evacuate the building immediately.
Leave all the lights, electrical appliances, etc. as they are.
DO NOT use electrical switches, telephones, appliances, garage door openers, cell phones, etc.
Call Ankerton Gas Co-op at 780-373-3773 from a safe distance once you have evacuated the premises.
Do not use lighters or matches and do not smoke.
Stay away from the building and area.

Do not try to repair the line yourself

Hitting a natural gas line is dangerous

⦁ Call Ankerton Gas immediately (780-373-3773) with a landline – do not use cell phones unless at a safe distance away.
The consequences of hitting and/or severing a line range from property damage and loss of service, to injuries and fatalities.
The financial and/or legal burden of repairing the gas line is carried by the party directly responsible for the damage. This will be the landowner unless specified otherwise.
Please REMEMBER that if a line is hit, the costs will include (but may not be limited to), time and resources to respond, repair the line and restore service to affected customers, the cost of the escaping natural gas and possible loss of revenues.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an invisible, silent, odourless toxic gas. In an enclosed space, such as a home or garage, CO exposure can lead to serious illness or death.
If you suspect a CO leak, contact Ankerton Gas Co-op at 780-373-3773 or your local Fire Department.

Make sure your wood burning fireplace has enough combustion and ventilation air.
Have a qualified service technician check all gas appliances (including furnaces and fireplaces) at the start of each heating season.
Never run a vehicle, snow blower, lawnmower etc. in a closed garage.
Never use a BBQ indoors (Natural Gas, Charcoal, or Propane).
Never run exhaust fans, power attic vents or a central vacuum system for prolonged periods.
Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector in your home.
Open doors and windows to air out the area.
Evacuate the building (including pets).
Seek medical advice immediately for physical symptoms.
